This hands-on program introduces participants to the fundamentals of mechanical design and programming using the powerful LEGO EV3 platform. Students will start by mastering the Driving Base, building extensions to perform tasks like object handling and line-following. The course delves into core engineering concepts, including gear systems, gear ratios, and the science of friction, as learners design and program Bevel Bots, gear-driven vehicles, and tilting platforms.

Through engaging projects, participants will gain practical experience in experimental design, testing, and refining machines to meet specific performance goals. They’ll explore real-world concepts such as acceleration, gravitational forces, and how engineers measure and improve machine accuracy. This course not only fosters creativity and problem-solving skills but also provides an exciting foundation in robotics, preparing students for future STEM challenges.

The Factory Robot (Mastering the Driving Base)
Design and build extensions onto the driving base and program it to complete following two tasks.
Extend the driving Base so that it grabs the Cuboid and releases it in the center of the target circle (i.e. the “drop-off zone”).
Extend the driving base so that it follows the line and stops as close as possible to the large object.

Build a Bevel Bot and try to drive exactly 1 meter.
Learn how do engineers work when developing new machines? How they set up experiments to measure a machine’s performance? What factors determine the amount of error that’s acceptable and whether the machine’s performance is good enough.
Make small adjustments to the Bevel Bot’sprogram and design so that it moves the 100 cm more accurately.

Build and program a Gear Model to master the basics of gears.
Learn about the gear wheel system. Understand the turning direction when two gears are meshed together and explore concepts such as gear ratio, input and output gear, and idler gears.

Build and program a Geared Vehicle to investigate the impact of using different gear trains.
Learn the terms transmission and gear reduction.
Understand why are gear units often encased. Explore the relationship between the gear ratio and the distance traveled. Understand the situations in which gear reduction is desirable and where reduction is required or not.

Build and program a Tilting Platform to experimentally determine the coefficient of
friction of different objects.
Learn what is friction and get familiar with any technical devices that harness the properties of
friction. Learn how can friction be reduced. Explore types of friction in general and static friction in
particular.

Build a Drop Tower to experimentally determine the gravitational constant.
Understand what does the term free fall refer to.
Understand the relation between acceleration and velocity.Explore the law of falling bodies. Ensure that the model is built correctly and works as expected.
